This section is intended to give aspiring hockey officials all the information they need to officiate ice hockey games in the DC-MD-VA area (SHOA’s jurisdiction).
It has been subdivided because the first step is to become a USA Hockey certified official. The first section will explain how to achieve this. Once there, you will find a link that will take you to a page where you will find information on how to become a SHOA member, a required step if you want to officiate games under SHOA’s auspices (and, perhaps more important, to get paid for the games you work for SHOA).
All hockey officials, regardless of their experience and level,
MUST be recertified with USA Hockey every year. This means that all officials nationwide must attend a USA Hockey seminar at the appropriate lever each year.
However, the procedure to become a SHOA member is a one-time process. Once you are a member of SHOA, the only thing required of you is to submit a signed Independent Contractor Agreement or ICA at the beginning of each season (more on that on the appropriate page). Please note that you
MUST become a member of SHOA before you can submit your ICA. The electronic form used to fill out the information needed for the ICA requires you to be a member before you can go through the whole process.
