MSHL Rules and Important Points To Remember The MSHL rulebook is available here.
There has been an important change in the new MSHL rules. It concerns the 10-goal "mercy" rule. Here is an excerpt of the MSHL rule book: "In all regular season games between MSHL teams (whether League or Non League), a ten goal rule is in effect. Thus, League Varsity, Provisional Varsity, Girls Varsity, JV, and JV Developmental games are complete upon the first occurrence of a 10 goal differential in the score: that is, the score and all statistics are final and the game ends. Play between the teams may not continue under any circumstances. The home team may use the remaining ice or yield it to the visiting team. The officials will remain on the ice until one team has left the ice."
The following MSHL rules are in effect:
-
Throwing one or more closed fist punches that make contact with an opponent warrants a Fighting Major and a Game Misconduct. The first Fighting Major in a season results in a 2-League Game suspension.
-
A penalty assessed for being the Instigator of a fight warrants a 2-League Game suspension.
-
Having 5 or more penalties assessed to a player during a game warrants a Game Misconduct and a 1-League Game suspension.
-
The 2nd Game Misconduct during a season warrants a Game Misconduct and 1-League
Game suspension.
Game suspensions can add up quickly. Read on:
If a player is assessed two penalties in a game and is then assessed a Fighting Major and a Game Misconduct for throwing one closed fist punch that makes contact with an opponent and is also assessed a penalty for being the Instigator for the Fighting Major, the League Game suspensions are: 2 for the FM and GM; 2 for the Instigator penalty; 1 for the 5 penalties in a game; and 1 for the 2nd GM in a season. That is a 6-League Game suspension in one game!
